We invest in training resources, including professional board-and-train programs when necessary.

No Breed Discrimination

We welcome all breeds and advocate for misunderstood ones, including bully breeds.

Emergency Rescue Ready

We respond to urgent situations, pulling animals in danger from disasters and neglect cases.

Volunteer Spotlight

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Elena Perry🌟

Meet Elena, our shining star and Volunteer of the Month! Elena joined our team in September 2023, and she has quickly become a favorite among both the two-legged and four-legged members of our rescue family. Here's why we adore Elena:

Volunteer Activity 1
  • 🐾 Dedicated Dog Lover: Elena is truly a dog's best friend. Whether she's walking our resident dogs, hosting sleepovers with our sweet building pups, or taking a resident furbaby for a fun Saturday outing, her love and commitment shine through every action.
  • 🐕‍🦺 Training Extraordinaire: Not only does Elena help with adoption applications for our resident building dogs, but she's also been instrumental in training some of our sassier canines. She works closely with trainers, ensuring these pups receive the attention and guidance they need, and she diligently continues their training, making a lasting impact on their lives.
  • 👩‍👧 Family Affair: It’s a family passion! Her daughter, Madeline, joins in to volunteer whenever she’s home from college, making their commitment to our cause a beautiful family affair, spreading love and care throughout our rescue.
  • 🦷 Beyond the Rescue: When she's not with us, Elena works as a dental hygienist. Her nurturing spirit is evident in her professional and volunteer work, always ensuring those around her are cared for and supported.
  • 🏠 A Heart for Fostering: Before joining us, Elena fostered dogs for another rescue. We feel so fortunate that she has brought her expertise and compassionate heart to our team. From all of us at the rescue and the countless tails wagging because of you, we thank you! You're not just a part of our team; you're part of our family.

Animal of the Month

🌟Milagra (Spanish for Miracle) 🌟

Stray Paws learned of a dog named Mila on Facebook, after a Texas rescue posted about her story. Mila was a stray in Brownsville, Texas, living on the streets. Neighbors said she’d been beaten with baseball bats (for no reason other than “fun”) and left for dead. She suffered many severe injuries. Most notably, much of Mila’s upper jaw was broken and necrotic, leaving her with an open wound.

  • 🐾 Her Story: In the weeks that followed, Mila tested positive for heartworm. Once treatment began, doctors then detected cancer. She underwent chemotherapy treatment for several months. Once she recovered from cancer treatments, Mila underwent reconstructive surgery at the University of Missouri. Doctors were able to reconstruct a functioning nose, allowing her to breathe more easily and eat and drink on her own.
  • 🏠 Want to know more?: Milagra’s incredible journey has inspired many, and we invite you to dive deeper into her story. Check out the detailed article written by First Alert 4, which highlights her remarkable transformation from a beaten and abandoned stray to a resilient survivor. It covers the struggles she faced—from the traumatic injuries that left her fighting for her life to her courageous battle against heartworm and cancer. Mila’s story is one of strength, resilience, and the power of second chances. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when we come together to support animals in need.
